10 rules on how to create a high quality kids app

We believe apps are an amazing new medium. A new medium that will not replace books, nor television, nor the internet. A new medium that is easily accessible to and used by very young kids. A new medium that will create experiences for kids that remain with them as they grow. A new medium needs new rules. Rules on how to create an app that is kind for kids. Here are our rules. We are developers who pledge to play by these rules. Let’s play together and create kind kids apps!

Don’t be ugly

Use authentic artwork. Please don’t use computer generated images by default.

Add beauty, heart and soul to the world of kids.

Find new ways

What’s tested, tried and proven in old media does not necessarily work in new media.

Design your app from scratch.

Don’t be easy peasy

Kids learn through play. Challenge them to go further.

Make sense

Enable intuitive play. A kids app should also be ‘readable’ by those that can’t read yet.

Don’t be boring

Build an app that’s interesting on more than one level.

Spark your imagination – and theirs.

Think out of the box

Use the analogue, technical and social possibilities of the platform.

Don’t be sneaky

Kids can not distinguish advertising from play. Be honest.

Speak their language

Only a small percentage of the kids in the world understand English.

Be as multilingual as you possibly can.

Don’t be a tattletale

Spying on kids is not okay. Don’t put hidden tracking software in your app.

Kids play carefree. Enable parents to let them.

Take kids seriously

Address kids in your own words and images, on their own level.

  2. WawaMouse says:

    It’s great!

  3. Marion says:

Great idea and initiative! Also a good check list for reviewers!

  4. Peet @wentelwereld says:

Dit is een mooi initiatief. Voor kwaliteits(kinder)apps mag je overigens ook best wat meer betalen… ;-D Ze zijn hun geld dubbel en dwars waard!

  5. Irene Nieuwenhuizen says:

    Also good for grandparents!!!!!

  6. These rules should of course be obvious. But not every one yet seems to understand. So yes, I fully support them!

Keep up the good and fun work!

  7. Great initiative! I’ve already signed the kind kids App Rules!

Very good initiative! New technology, innovation and education a great trinity.

  9. Sherri Burgan says:

    Absolutely!!! Great list!

  10. Good work guys (and girls!).
We totally agree on your 10 Kind Kids App rules!

  11. P Mantle says:

There is an obvious lack of quality apps with innovative and original content for children. Existing book titles and brands for example are fast and easy to convert to apps while new innovation, ideas and originality take a lot longer to develop and even longer to market and build brand equity. Indie developers like us appreciate any support for our new, innovative apps for kids.

  12. Adam Coccari says:

I really loved this, and think you capture all the qualities that separate the truly special apps from the hoards of mediocre apps for kids. I definitely tried to follow all these guidelines when designing and creating Math Evolve. I hope it inspires kids and amazes them in the same way that games inspired me as a child. I wholeheartedly agree with all of your rules, and InterAction Education would be proud to sign my name as a developer.

Thanks for taking the initiative to provide top quality apps for our children.

  14. This is a fabulous list of requirements to be part of this new initiative.

I will gladly support your efforts to encourage child-friendly, excellent app development!

  15. I am sure that this project will transform into platform that will bring quality app developers together. Hope we will talk about it soon.

  16. Great ensamble guys! Please sign me up as a supporter as well.

    Cheers,
    Michel

  17. This is a great initiative! Wish there was something similar for movies and programmes on tv! I would sign that immediately as well!
    Keep up the good work!
